A popular trend in today’s architecture and construction industry, single building projects with a multitude of purposes are currently on the rise, and are most evident in major cities around the United States. As one of the most vibrant cities in the U.S., Miami, which is on its way to becoming one of the largest international business hubs in the world, is not an exception. As a city that leads in commerce, culture, and international trade, Miami has been developing properties that can cater to multiple needs while addressing accessibility, convenience, and comfort. 

The following contractors have proven themselves experts in building spaces that fulfil many needs all in one building. Apart from such functional buildings, the buildings built by these firms are some of the most beautiful and unique structures in the city. The firms have all been evaluated on customer service and craftsmanship, as well as accolades and features in publications. This list was also developed through a consultation with one of the top Florida construction firms. 


Amicon Construction

7448 NE 4th Court, Miami, FL 33138

Established in 1996, Amicon Construction specializes in pre-construction, construction management, and other general contracting services. Headquartered in South Florida, Amicon has expanded its reach with active projects in other markets including all of Florida, Arizona and Maryland.  Amicon offers a full suite of integrated services allowing for a customized approach to meeting each client’s goals. The company, led by Adam Mopsick and Ross Adickman, continues to revolutionize the construction industry by focusing on management, leadership, and advocacy for every client.

Amicon’s team has specialized experience working with local and out-of-state developers to deliver projects towards the client’s unique targets. 1824 Alton Road consists of a mixed-use 110,000-square-foot building designed by Kobi Karp. Anchor tenants include Michaels, Starbucks, and CitiBank as well as other retailers. This class A property recently transacted for a record high to an institutional investor. Backed by dedicated divisions in owner representation and costing, Amicon is uniquely positioned to provide strategic leadership in the preconstruction, permitting, and construction phases.


Balfour Beatty Construction

Balfour Beatty Construction’s is headquartered in London, with branches in the Fort Lauderdale area and in 17 other locations across the country. Leading the Florida office is Chairman of Operations Scott Skidelsky, who serves as the head of national business acquisition, procurement, and communications. Skidelsky studied engineering at the University of Illinois and served as an Officer in Charge of Construction and Contracting Officer in the U.S. Navy. 

Under Skidelsky’s leadership, the Fort Lauderdale office has been honored with numerous awards, including the National Association for Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP) 2014 Economic Impact of the Year Award.

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Art is one of Balfour Beatty’s exceptional works. A 263,000 square foot facility with a cast-in-place concrete and steel structure, the project features two state of the art theaters, gathering areas, and the School of the Arts. It was completed in 2014 and holds a Silver LEED certificate.


CAMCON Group

4970 SW 72nd Ave. Unit #109, Miami, FL 33155

Established in 2015, CAMCON is a newcomer in the Miami area with deep roots. President Carlos De Mena founded the company with more than 20 years of experience in the industry. He currently sits on the South Florida Association of General Contractors (SFAGC) Board of Directors, and actively supports the Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC). The firm was also featured in local magazines like Curbed Miami and holds a Gold LEED certification.

One of the firm’s notable Florida projects is the University of Miami’s Alumni Center. Completed in 2010, this 70,000 square foot building is four stories tall and was designed by world renowned architect Michael Dennis and local design firm MGE Architects. It has also achieved a Gold LEED certification. CAMCON is also currently constructing the Buena Vista, an 18,500 square foot residential mixed-use development in the Buena Vista District on 47th Street and 2nd Avenue, due for completion in 2019. The project is composed of two levels of residential lofts on top of ground-level retail space. Developed by Harry Benitah and designed by DB Lewis Architect, it aims to offer “the charm of the Buena Vista neighborhood within walking distance of some of Miami’s most desirable destinations.”


Coastal Construction Group

Since 1988, four generations of the Murphy family have built the company that continues to help shape Miami’s construction and architectural landscape. In addition to mixed-use properties, Coastal Construction Group specializes in commercial, hospitality, education, residential, worship, interiors, historic restoration, and disaster recovery. The firm is known as one of the safest contractors, having been recognized with the Willis/AGC Construction Safety Excellence Award in 2015. Coastal has won many other awards and is also a three time winner of the University of South Florida’s Sunshine State Safety Award.

One of Coastal’s mixed-use projects is The Compson Place. Comprised of two four story office buildings, it is a large scale mixed-use development with impressive fitted missile-impact glass and state of the art products designed to sustain high winds. 

Another notable mixed-use project is the Axis in Brickell Village. A 1.3 million square foot development, it consists of two 40-story buildings with 718 residential units. Designed by Arquitectonica, it includes an outstanding array of features in its amenity area: A lap pool, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, theater room, library/cyber cafe, and a fitness center including aerobics and a yoga room, a weight room, a cardio room, a two-story party room, billiards area, game area lounge, business center, and kitchen.


John Moriarty & Associates

1942 Tyler St., Hollywood, FL 33020

Founded in 1985, John Moriarty and Associates is a large company, with branches in Florida, Connecticut, and Virginia. The Florida office was established in 1990, and specializes in luxury high-rise residential, hospitality, cultural/institutional, office, multifamily, and commercial mixed-use projects. Several of these projects have been featured in magazines like Real Deal, South Florida Business Journal, Miami New Times,  Miami Herald, and Construction Today. Currently, the firm has over 250 ground-up construction projects totaling over 65 million square feet. John Moriarty and Associates has an impeccable track record, and the firm has been established as one of the most respected construction management and general contracting firms in the country. 

In all of Southern Florida, Brickell City Centre is one of the best-known landmark mixed-use developments. It includes a 500,000 square-foot open-air mall anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, two Class A office towers, the 42-story East Hotel, and two residential towers called Rise and Reach. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) recently honored John Moriarty and Associates for this project with the 2017 Project of the Year Award.


Kaufman Lynn Construction

In 1989, Kaufman Lynn Construction founder and CEO Michael Kaufman established the firm with a deep commitment to each person involved in the building process—from the clients to the employees and the community. Today, the firm is recognized as one of the top general contractors in Florida and is among the 400 largest contractors nationwide. In addition to this recognition, the firm has also won numerous awards. Kaufman has received 18 craftsmanship awards from the Construction Association of South Florida over the past five years alone, together with two Golden Eagle Awards for Quality Construction from ABC, and a national ENR “Best of the Best” Award.

Recently, Kaufman Lynn completed the 2020 Salzedo, a 16-story, mixed-use building in Coral Gables that has the aesthetics of a castle and the functionality of a modern complex. Included in the 213-unit structure are office and retail spaces, nearly 300,000 square feet of residential space, and a  seven story parking garage that accommodates 566 vehicles. 


Moss & Associates

2101 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311

Moss and Associates is a Fort Lauderdale-based general contractor, founded in 2002 by Chairman/CEO Bob Moss and President Scott Moss. In addition to the Fort Lauderdale headquarters, Moss also has Florida offices in Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and West Palm Beach, as well as Hawaii, California, and Texas. The firm has received the University of South Florida’s Sunshine State Safety Award for its work. Moss is also a recognized leader in green building, with more than 50 associates who are either on their ways to obtaining or has already obtained LEED AP status from the U.S. Green Building Council.

One of the firm’s notable projects is the Auberge Beach Residences & Spa in Fort Lauderdale. This building offers a 450 linear feet view of the Atlantic Ocean and boasts resort-style amenities and services, including a world-class spa and restaurant. It also has a Napa Valley Wine Cellar, a 24/7 valet and concierge, a state-of-the-art fitness center overlooking the pool deck, a golf simulator, a family-friendly children’s playroom, and a club room with multimedia facilities, billiards and gaming tables.

The project was designed by Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates. It consists of two residential towers—18 and 23 stories respectively—with a total of 161 units. Starting on the second floor of each tower, residences range from one to five bedrooms and 1,500 to 5,000 square feet. Wrap-around, two-level penthouses are also offered, including more than 3,500 square feet of terraces.


Stiles

301 East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 

With “Invest. Build. Manage.” as a mantra, Stiles is a full-service commercial real estate firm that provides construction and general contracting, as well as development, tenant improvement, realty, property management, architecture, acquisitions, and financing services. Founded in 1951 by Howard K. Stiles, the firm is now in the hands of third-generation family member Ken. Stiles currently has a portfolio of 48 million square feet of office, industrial, retail, mixed-use, and residential projects throughout the Southeast. The firm has been the recipient of  numerous awards, including the ABC Eagle and Pyramid Awards, as well the Sunshine State Award for Safety. The firm was also featured in the South Florida Business Journal.

Hollywood Circle is one of Stiles’ most recent projects. The building has 397 residential units, 104 hotel units, and a 46,744-square foot Publix, as well as an additional 11,379 square feet of retail space. Located directly on Young Circle, it is valued at $123 million.


Suffolk

Suffolk is national general contractor with offices in several locations across the country, including Miami. The company encourages project teams to innovate in their work and push the boundaries of what’s possible for their clients. The Miami office is strategically located in the downtown area, to be easily accessible to architects and clients alike, making it easier for them to come together and share creative ideas. The office is led by President and General Manager of the Southeast region Pete Tuffo.

One of the firm’s notable projects is Fifth and Alton, a retail mixed-use project owned and developed by the Berkowitz Development Group. Its 780,000 square feet sit on auger-cast piles with elevated concrete decks, supported by a pre-stressed concrete joist system. Suffolk has been featured in magazines like the Magazine Herald, South Florida Business Journal, Curbed Miami, Construction Dive, and Bisnow. It  has also been honored with multiple awards for this work, including the ABC Eagle Awards.
